In the surrounding of Rairi there is many bare and dried out land and however there is a irrigation system available, sponsored by China, almost no farmer is using the system due to lack of knowledge. We are introducing the Oriental paddock system where water flows from one field to the other to make the whole area moisture. Our farmer Samwel Okumu and Melda Achieng are busy to implement this system on a piece of land close to the irrigation system. We want to create a system where it is possible to have 3 crops a year. Now our sorghum and sweet potatoes are doing very well even in the dry season.
For land that is far from water resources we experiment with natural agriculture where we cover the land with left over material from maize, reed and saw dust. I received a hand full of seeds of Happy Valley Rice which originate from Masanobu Fukuoka who was using this rice in Japan. It is a dry growing variety and it can be seeded directly into the field without replanting. The first seeds have sprouted and the plants are growing up. Ones we have enough of the rice seeds we will seed them in combination with clover seeds to have green manure growing together with the rice.BY CHANGING THE QUANTITY YOU CHANGE THE AMOUNT YOU DONATE!
